Yet this confrontation need not yield despair, paralysis, or reckless hedonism. Instead, it can ground a principled way of life.

Enter nihilethics—an invented portmanteau blending nihil (nothing) with ethics. It denotes a philosophical position and practical ethos that fully embraces existential or cosmic nihilism while deriving a coherent, compassionate ethical framework from that very acceptance. Nihilethics affirms that all is ultimately meaningless or counterproductive at the absolute level, yet commits to making the best of one's finite life through deliberate, harm-minimizing actions and the subjective creation of value. It is neither naive optimism nor defeatist resignation, but a clear-eyed, pragmatic humanism forged in the crucible of meaninglessness.

  3. Practical Orientation: "Making the best of one's life" is not hedonistic excess but a balanced, reflective navigation: pursuing curiosity, connection, creativity, and quiet pleasures; avoiding unnecessary harm; and cultivating equanimity in the face of absurdity.

Nihilethics is thus descriptive (acknowledging the void) and prescriptive (choosing compassionate action within it). It transforms nihilism from a potential abyss into a liberating foundation for ethics.

The First and Last Pharmakon

They were given a mirror,

The Myth

In Plato’s Phaedrus, the god Theuth presents his inventions to King Thamus. Reaching writing, he calls it a pharmakon for memory: a remedy that will make people wiser. Thamus disagrees. The inventor, he says, is the least qualified judge of his own art. Writing will not strengthen memory but plant forgetfulness — an elixir not of memory (mnēmē) but of reminding (hypomnēsis). Those who rely on it will seem to know much while remaining, for the most part, ignorant.

Pharmakon means both remedy and poison, with no stable word to separate them. Writing was the first cognitive technology to show this. It was not the last.

And Thamus was only half right. Writing also made cumulative science, codified law, and civilizational coordination possible. The pharmakon doesn’t resolve toward the poison — it doesn’t resolve at all. Any honest account of a new cognitive technology, including AI, has to hold both halves at once. Otherwise it isn’t really about the pharmakon; it’s an argument for one side, wearing the myth as a costume.

What Externalization Changes

The danger isn’t lost facts — it’s a changed relation to knowledge. Real understanding takes labor: inquiry, testing claims, internalizing what’s been examined until it becomes working judgment. When that labor is handed to an external system, the user can get fluent results without the process that used to produce them.

The feeling of being informed can arrive without the formation of the capacity to be informed on one’s own.

This is also a claim about incentives. A technology that lowers the cost of a task creates real pressure toward disuse of the unaided version — not by decree, but because effort is expensive and people reasonably economize on it. Institutions adjust: what counts as ordinary competence shrinks. The epic poet’s memory, the merchant’s mental arithmetic, the scholar’s unaided reasoning — each became less required as some pharmakon absorbed part of its work.

A tool doesn’t need to capture every mind. It only needs to shift what a culture bothers to cultivate.

Extension and Replacement

Some tools extend a power without displacing the activity that built it — the pencil, the telescope, a calculator used by someone who already understands what multiplication is. The faculty stays the governing center; the tool presupposes a competence it doesn’t replace.

Systems that produce finished reasoning or finished prose work differently in kind. Calling this “thought” risks claiming more than we know. More carefully: their outputs can substitute for the products of reasoning, without the user having done the work that normally generates them. That’s enough to matter — whatever we call what the machine is doing.

Thinking is not a task whose output can be delegated so the soul is freed for something else.
It is the activity through which a person becomes capable of that something else.

This rests on an assumption worth naming: that going through a process changes the person who goes through it, and that this is worth having independent of the output. That’s a broadly Aristotelian premise, not a universal one — much of contemporary epistemology cares only whether a belief is true and well-supported, not its psychological history. Readers who don’t share the premise should know that’s where the real disagreement starts.

Friction as Counter-Pharmakon

Plato didn’t abandon writing; he changed its form. Casting philosophy as dialogue forced the reader to reconstruct the argument rather than simply receive it.

The same move is available now: stating what you think before a system answers, so the answer lands against something; drafting a rough version yourself and using the tool to press on it; treating an AI’s output as an opening move to interrogate, not a verdict to accept. None of this is exotic — it costs time, which is the point. It converts the tool from pure hypomnēsis back toward genuine judgment, at the price of the speed that made it attractive.

Friction has to be chosen against the grain of the market that sells its absence.

The Permanent Question

No technical fix keeps the remedy and discards the poison — every new externalization reopens the same dilemma. The real question is never is this tool good or bad but who decides the boundary between what must stay internal to a person and what can be handed outward. That line isn’t fixed by the technology. It’s drawn by whoever designs the tools, regulates them, sets educational standards — and by anyone, daily, choosing between convenience and the harder work of thinking it through themselves.

If this is rightly called the first and last pharmakon, the “last” is not a claim that the pattern ends here. It marks something more specific. Every earlier externalization — the tablet, the book, the search index — still left the shape of a thought to be produced by the person doing the thinking; it stored or retrieved, but it did not compose. Generative systems are the first to close that distance fully, producing the finished shape itself. That may make this pharmakon the most complete expression yet of the problem writing first exposed — not the final chapter, but so far the fullest one.
